As usual, I loved the latest hot and heavy story by Jessica “Jessie” Miles. She has never disappointed me, and I doubt she ever will. I am her self-proclaimed biggest fan for good reason. She is a great author and this was yet another great book.

The main character, Kyle, is a bit of a loner nerd. He sits around on his computer most of the day and rarely leaves his room. His job is online. He is an online gamer. His only friends are online. And he is starting to get tired of it. His twin brother, Chris, has a smokin' hot girlfriend and Kyle is jealous. Until that girlfriend comes over for dinner and starts hitting on Kyle. Things get pretty hot, and it looks like maybe Kyle will get what he wanted.

But that's when things start to get weird. Kyle comes across a pack of wolves that don't look like any wolves he has ever seen. And they seem to be following him. It turns out that they are werewolves looking for him because one of the females in their pack has decided that she wants him. She is dead-set on having him for her own, and she won't stop until she has him. What happens with those two can't be described as anything less than a five-alarm fire.

Kyle really transforms during this short time. He becomes a great leader and caretaker of those around him. I really admired him a lot in the end.

There is also a were-baby birth in this story that is really touching. I loved it.

So, as usual, I recommend this and all of Jessica's other books as well. Enjoy!

PS- I want to point out that while this is the second book in the Beast and Beauty series, it stands completely on it's own. You don't have to read Animal Heart first to know what's going on.

Lonely Planet has always had a penchant for the slightly quirky approach - and this is no exception. It's a beautiful, interesting, coffee table style book lavishly illustrated throughout.

The book starts with its least successful bits - brief chapters on the biggest, longest etc, and then a series of themes too large to be at all meaningful in a book of this nature on Arts & Architecture, Music, Food and Drink etc. There are also brief looks at the major regions and several great Road Trips.

Then, we get into the meat of this large tome. Each state is given around four pages looking at:

- history
- landscape
- natural beauty
- trademarks
- people
- representations (particularly interesting)
- culture and traditions
- cuisine
- economy
- urban scene
- did you know?
- myths
- essential experiences

And each state has a number of full colour pictures - not your typical tourist images but often of people, food, etc.

It's totally dip-into-able and frequently fascinating. I've docked the book one star though because while some of the images are fantastic, the quality of others is not quite up to what I'd call "National Geographic standard".

In a country as large as the US, it's all too easy to identify omissions from various chapters (why no mention of the Sopranos in New Jersey for example) but that misses the point of this book in my opinion. Highly recommended.
